Model answer with sentence-by-sentence improvements
Three tasks. One platform.
Academic, General Training, or Essay — evaluated by AI on every official criterion.
Task 1 · Academic
Describe a chart, graph, diagram, or process in at least 150 words. Graded on data selection, overview, and accurate reporting.
Task 1 · General
Write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter in at least 150 words. Purpose, tone, and content coverage are all assessed.
Task 2 · Essay
Argue, discuss, or evaluate a position in at least 250 words. The same task for both Academic and General Training — and worth twice the marks.
Strategy for each criterion
Every IELTS Writing band score is the average of these four — understand each one.
Task Achievement
Does the response fully address all parts of the task with a clear position, relevant ideas, and adequate extension?
- ✓Always write a clear thesis in Task 2 — examiners look for a position
- ✓For Task 1, include an overview paragraph — never skip it
- ✓Cover all bullet points in GT letters
- ✓Stay on topic — irrelevant content lowers your TA score
Coherence & Cohesion
Is the response logically organised with smooth progression? Are linking words used accurately without being mechanical?
- ✓Each paragraph should have one clear central idea
- ✓Use cohesive devices naturally — not just 'Firstly, Secondly, Finally'
- ✓Reference words (this, these, such) show cohesion without repetition
- ✓Topic sentences should preview the paragraph's argument
Lexical Resource
Is there a wide range of vocabulary used with precision? Are there attempts at less common words, even if occasionally inaccurate?
- ✓Paraphrase the question prompt — never copy it word for word
- ✓Use collocations naturally: 'a significant increase', not 'a big go-up'
- ✓Vary noun forms: 'pollution', 'pollutants', 'polluted areas'
- ✓Minor spelling errors matter less than lexical range
Grammatical Range
Is there a variety of complex structures used with accuracy? A few errors are acceptable if they don't impede communication.
- ✓Use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences
- ✓Conditional sentences (If…, unless…) show range without risk
- ✓Passive voice suits academic writing — especially Task 1 process diagrams
- ✓Subject-verb agreement errors are penalised heavily at Band 6+
