Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support nearly a quarter of all marine species. Rising ocean temperatures — driven by climate change — have triggered mass bleaching events across the Indo-Pacific, leaving vast stretches of reef biologically dead within a matter of weeks.
Scientists now warn that without immediate action, up to 90 percent of the world's coral reefs could be lost by 2050. Elevated sea surface temperatures cause corals to expel the symbiotic algae that give them both colour and energy.

Band score with passage and question breakdown

Turn every reading test into a vocabulary lesson
What's inside each test
Three passages, each longer and harder than the last — just like exam day.
Factual / Descriptive
A readable passage on an everyday academic topic — science, environment, or history. The first passage is the most accessible.
Analytical / Discursive
A more structured text with arguments, comparisons, or descriptions of a process. Vocabulary difficulty increases.
Complex Academic
The hardest passage — dense, abstract academic language. Often involves gap fill and sentence completion tasks.
Strategy for some question types
The same 3 types appear in almost every IELTS Reading test — know how to tackle each.
True / False / Not Given
- ✓Read the statement before scanning the passage
- ✓'Not Given' means the text neither confirms nor denies — don't guess
- ✓Answers appear in the same order as the passage
- ✓One changed word can flip TRUE to FALSE — read carefully
Do the following statements agree with the information given in the passage?
Coral bleaching is caused exclusively by rising ocean temperatures.
Multiple Choice
- ✓Read all options before selecting — wrong answers paraphrase the passage
- ✓The correct answer often uses synonyms, not the exact words
- ✓Eliminate options that go beyond what the text states
- ✓Questions follow the passage order — use this to locate the answer
Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D.
What was the main reason for the decline in bee populations?
Gap Fill / Sentence Completion
- ✓Word limit is strict — 'ONE WORD ONLY' means exactly one word
- ✓Your answer must be copied directly from the passage
- ✓Read surrounding sentences for grammatical clues
- ✓Check your answer fits the sentence structure and meaning
Complete the sentences below. Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.
The scientist concluded that the experiment required a larger ________.
