Mechanical fresher interviews lean hard on second-year fundamentals — thermodynamics, strength of materials, manufacturing processes — precisely because panels know final-year students have forgotten them. Two focused days of basics revision routinely outperforms weeks of scattered preparation.

There's also the question the syllabus never covers: many mechanical students interview at IT companies, and "why software?" deserves a prepared, honest answer rather than an apologetic one. Both worlds are below.

    State the laws of thermodynamics in plain words.

    Zeroth through second, one sentence each — energy is conserved, entropy increases, heat flows hot to cold. The follow-up is usually a real example: why a fridge needs power, why engines can't be 100% efficient. Plain words prove understanding; equations recited prove memory.

    What's the difference between stress and strain?

    Stress is internal force per unit area; strain is the resulting deformation ratio — dimensionless. Sketching the stress-strain curve and naming yield point and ultimate strength usually follows, so have the curve in your head, not just the definitions.

    What is the difference between a two-stroke and four-stroke engine?

    Power every revolution versus every second revolution; simpler and lighter versus cleaner and more efficient. Tie each to where it's used — bikes and small tools versus cars — to show the trade-off thinking panels actually want.

    Explain the difference between casting, forging, and machining.

    Pour molten metal into a mold; deform hot metal under force; remove material by cutting. The differentiator is when each wins — complex shapes, strength-critical parts, precision finishes — because process selection is the actual job.

    What is the Carnot cycle, and why can't a real engine reach it?

    The ideal reversible heat-engine cycle setting the maximum possible efficiency between two temperatures. Real engines lose to friction and irreversibility — that one "why not" sentence is what separates understanding from a memorized diagram.

    What's the difference between pipe and tube? Between welding, brazing, and soldering?

    Rapid-fire definition pairs are a mechanical-panel staple, asked to test fluency in the trade's vocabulary. Drill fifteen of these pairs the week before — they're free marks delivered in ten seconds each.

    Walk me through your final-year project.

    Same rule as every branch: know the whole project including your teammates' parts, your specific contribution, and one thing that went wrong. For mechanical projects, expect "why this material?" and "how did you validate it?" as the standard follow-ups.

    Which CAD/CAE tools have you used, and what did you actually make?

    Name the tool and the artifact — a modeled assembly, an analysis you ran — not just the software list from your resume. "I did a course on ANSYS" invites the follow-up that "I simulated the bracket from our project and found the stress concentration" already answered.

    Why do you want to join an IT company as a mechanical engineer?

    Asked in most campus drives, and the apologetic answer ("no core jobs") fails. The strong version is evidence of deliberate choice: programming courses you took, things you built, the overlap you enjoy. Same facts, framed as pursuit.

  10. Question 10

    Are you willing to work in a plant / on shifts / at a remote site?

    Core-sector roles come with real site conditions, and panels test whether you've understood that. Visit-day stories or internship exposure make your yes credible; a yes with visible hesitation is scored as a no.
